The adventures of the most famous and incurably optimistic sea sponge and his friends are flooding into the United States ! THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE : SPONGE ON THE RUN has been part of the launch catalogue of Paramount + on March 4th and is now available on AppleTV, Prime Video, Vudu and other digital stores. 

It’s a great pleasure to know that the adventures of SpongeBob in a first 3D feature animation are finally available to as many people as possible.

To fully respect the franchise, the teams at Mikros Animation paid a particular attention to translating the content from 2D to 3D, while developing a new, richer look.

The artists have adopted an animation in 2’s to differentiate the style of the characters and environments. The latter, which were created in an “almost” complete CG version, required in-depth stylistic exploration, leading to a redefinition of the language of shapes and visual codes, to bring new colorful and contrasting landscapes with a high level of detail. The design and animation of the characters were also very demanding in order to preserve the spirit of the original series, the individuality and personality of each protagonist. The teams have rethought the design of the characters in 3D: moving limbs, 2D shapes, animated special effects, shading transfer,…. so that the characters can act, move, deform and perform all kinds of stunts!

The excellence of the character design and animation has been recently recognized by the Visual Effects Society as SpongeBob got nominated in the “Outstanding Animated Character in an Animated Feature” category for the 2021 awards.
